Another Cloudy Rainy Week For The Big Apple

Another Cloudy Rainy Week For The Big Apple

Today is one of those days when the atmosphere disagrees with itself, giving us blah, overcast skies. Surface high pressure sitting just southeast of the city is providing a somewhat cool, dry air near the ground, but a few miles above a disturbance is approaching the area. There's just enough moisture, and the shortwave has enough energy, to produce clouds, but not enough for rain—so we're looking at overcast skies and a high in the mid to upper 60s this afternoon. more ›

SUPERMOON Fail: SuperMoon Obscured By Superclouds In NYC

SUPERMOON Fail: SuperMoon Obscured By Superclouds In NYC

Last night's SuperMoon turned out to be a superfail—it was too cloudy in NYC to see the lunar phenomena. New Yorkers handled it like champs though—after all, we're more than a little bit used to crushing disappointment: "What do the Knicks, playoffs and "Supermoon" have in common here in NY? Huge build up, anticipation and, in the end, disappointment," tweeted Danny Hairston. more ›

More Rain For The Beginning Of May

More Rain For The Beginning Of May

You'll have to excuse us today, we are traumatized by the Weather Channel's redesign. So traumatized that we're boycotting them for a day. Anyway, as expected earlier in the week a warm front has taken up residence a couple hundred miles south of the city. The front itself isn't going to move much until Friday, but there will be episodes where warm, moist air overruns the front and gives us rain. Like this afternoon for example. Most of the rain will be light but heavier showers are possible at times. more ›

Unsettled, But Probably Cloudy, Weather This Week

Unsettled, But Probably Cloudy, Weather This Week

Hey kids of Gothamlandia, not only is this Severe Weather Awareness Week it is also Air Quality Awareness Week! You should go read them to remind yourself of what to do when bad weather or bad air strikes. You should also read them and skip the rest of this post because this forecast is bound to be more inaccurate than usual. more ›

Windy Start To Weekend As Wet Weather Departs

Windy Start To Weekend As Wet Weather Departs

The low pressure system that was bugging us all week has moved up to Nova Scotia. The storm has been deepening rapidly as it moves up the coast and that strengthening is responsible for today's windy weather. Look for a stiff northwesterly breeze all day and well into the night. Replacing that low is a cool, dry high pressure system. The dew point temperature has dropped more than twenty degrees since midnight and will continue falling today, setting the stage for a pretty chilly night. In the city we should see lows in the upper 30s. Below freezing temperatures are likely not too far to the north. more ›

Cloudy, Cool Weather Continues On

Cloudy, Cool Weather Continues On

The stubborn low pressure system that's dominated the weather this week is finally moving away today. It will quickly be replaced by another low but let's not worry about that just yet. Nearly three inches of rain fell from this storm, and that much-needed rain was more than what fell in all of February and March. In addition, the last three days have been cooler than normal, which hasn't happened since mid-January. Cooler than normal weather may last until early next week. You have to go back to the time of the October snow to find a similar streak of cool weather. more ›

A Low Begins To Flow, Rain May Follow

A Low Begins To Flow, Rain May Follow

The slacker low pressure system that's been hanging out over Quebec and northern New England the last several days has finally roused itself out of bed and is now straggling around. Later today the low will move out to sea and become absorbed by a larger storm. The storm will pass close enough to the city to bring us a cool and cloudy day. We may see a few showers, nothing particularly significant, from this afternoon through tomorrow. Today will be the coolest day of the week with a high only reaching the mid 50s. more ›

Windy Weather To Start The Work Week

Windy Weather To Start The Work Week

Remember that junior high science about nature abhorring a vacuum? Well, that abhorrence is giving us a windy day today. A fairly strong low pressure system is hanging out over northern Maine at the same time a high pressure system is moving toward New York. As the high and low get closer the the wind will blow faster to even out the pressure differences between the two. This afternoon will see the wind blowing at a good 20-25 mph with the occasional gust to 40 mph. High winds, low humidity and plenty of dry underbrush will again make conditions favorable for the rapid spread of brush fires like this one in New Jersey. more ›

Sun-Filled Weekend Follows A Decade Of Warming

Sun-Filled Weekend Follows A Decade Of Warming

This week is our eighth anniversary here on Gothamist so let's take a moment to look at how the temperature has changed over the past decade. It's hard to see trends when daily temperatures are plotted over a long time because the seasonal cycle and day-to-day fluctuations are so big. Instead, we've plotted cumulative highs and lows so you can see periods of warmer/cooler weather. Not much happened the first few years. First there were a few warm months, then a few cool months, then the temperature was decidedly average through July 2005. More than three years of warm weather follow before the cool 2009 occurs. Except for the cold and snowy Dec 2010 - Jan 2011 the last two years have featured almost continuous warming, winding up with the incredible spike of the last few months. November, December, February and March were all among their top five warmest months since measurements began in 1869. Overall, the city has warmed about a degree in the past ten years. more ›

Several Days Of Sunny, Dry Weather On Tap

Several Days Of Sunny, Dry Weather On Tap

While we had a very pleasant day yesterday the same can't be said for the Dallas area, which was hit by several tornadoes. Despite hundreds of buildings being destroyed and this insane video of 15,000 pound tractor trailers being tossed around like matchsticks, nobody was killed or even seriously hurt. That disturbance has moved on to the Gulf Coast this morning and is not expected to make its way anywhere close to us. more ›

April Begins With Sun and Wind

April Begins With Sun and Wind

As expected, the cold weather on Saturday meant that last month fell two-tenths of a degree short of setting a record for warmest March ever recorded in Central Park. Still, the average of 50.9 degrees easily pushed 2012 into second place. Every other spot in the metro area, JFK, Laguardia, Islip, Bridgeport, and Newark, had their warmest March ever. Last month was also Central Park's fourth driest on record with only 0.96 inches of precipitation observed. more ›

Sunny Today, Soggy And Cold Saturday

Sunny Today, Soggy And Cold Saturday

March 2012 is turning the old weather proverb on its head by coming in like a lamb and going out like a lion. Oh, today will be plenty docile but tonight and tomorrow are looking like a soggy wool sweater. High pressure centered over Elmira this morning will give us a sunny and seasonable day. Look for a high in the mid 50s with a brisk wind out of the west this afternoon. more ›

Spring Showers Today, Record Warm March In Doubt

Spring Showers Today, Record Warm March In Doubt

This is so discouraging. Despite three record highs and eight days in the 70s this month, we may not have a record warm March. Through yesterday the month is a tenth of a degree above the record pace. Today's warmth will cushion that lead by a few extra tenths of a degree, but more seasonable temperatures for the remainder of the month will cut into that lead. more ›

March Weather Finally Makes An Appearance

March Weather Finally Makes An Appearance

Egads! Can it be that we're having normal March weather in March? At least for today the temperature will be pretty close to average for late March. Look for a high in the mid 50s early this afternoon and a midnight low in the upper 30s, as cool dry air arrives behind the cold front that just passed through the region. It's going to be blustery for the next day or so as the Canadian high pressure system is arriving faster than the weekend storm is leaving. more ›

A Final Warm Day Before The Rain Arrives

A Final Warm Day Before The Rain Arrives

Yesterday's Central Park high of 78 surpassed by one degree the record for March 22nd set in 1938. If the thermometer reaches the forecast high of 76 this afternoon we will tie the 1923 record for this date. Nobody will be surprised by this, but as of now March is running at a record warm pace. more ›

Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Trees Will Have Peaked Before Annual Fest

Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Trees Will Have Peaked Before Annual Fest

The unseasonably warm weather we've been having this winter has really messed things up, and now it may ruin the annual Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival at Brooklyn Botanic garden... again. You've probably been spotting the trees blossoming around the city already, and things are no different at the BBG, where their map shows 11 trees currently at "first bloom," and a couple more at "peak bloom" (there are over 200 on their grounds). What does this mean for the festival, held on April 28th and 29th? Many will be past their prime by the time it rolls around. more ›

Once Again A Foggy Morning Followed By A Sunny Afternoon

Once Again A Foggy Morning Followed By A Sunny Afternoon

This weather is turning into a real life version of the movie Groundhog Day. Once again we've got a foggy morning that will turn into a sunny and warm afternoon. Look for record highs to be set everywhere in the region today except at Central Park. Oh, heck, look for record highs across much of the eastern half of the country today. Chicago will, incredibly, see its sixth 80-degree day in the last week. Feel free to sleep through tomorrow as we're looking at an almost identical forecast: foggy in the morning followed by a sunny, warm, afternoon. If anything, tomorrow should be warmer and Central Park may get close to the record of 77 degrees. Tomorrow will also be a double-double sixpeat -the sixth straight day where the high and low are both at least ten degrees warmer than normal. more ›

Photos: NYC's Moody Morning Fog

What a foggy morning! It's expected to clear up in the 10-11 a.m. hour but the conditions have traveling by ferry a bit slower (the Staten Island Ferry is running on a modified rush hour schedule). Also, some of New York City has disappeared—look at these photos! more ›

Un-Winter Ends With May Weather

Un-Winter Ends With May Weather

The parade of unseasonably warm weather continues unabated! The morning fog has evaporated and we're on our way to the sunny low 70s this afternoon thanks to a southerly breeze. Mid-May temperatures for the last day of winter seems appropriate this year. Sometime tonight a weak backdoor cold front, a front that sneaks down from New England, will pass through the city. That will bring us an easterly wind and hold the temperature down to the lower 60s for the first day of spring. more ›

Rainy Today, Warm, Sunny Weather Returns Tomorrow For Extended Stay

Rainy Today, Warm, Sunny Weather Returns Tomorrow For Extended Stay

The east wind is an evil wind. The breeze off the cold ocean kept yesterday's temperature down to only six degrees warmer than normal, way cooler than the twenty degrees above normal to which we had become acclimatized. That easterly wind will continue to bring the chill, and fog and drizzle, for a while longer today. A weak cold front that's currently over Lakes Erie and Ontario will change the wind direction this evening. Before that front arrives we stand a good chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm this afternoon. Today's high will be in the upper 50s. more ›

Near Record Warmth On The Anniversary Of The Blizzard Of 1888

Near Record Warmth On The Anniversary Of The Blizzard Of 1888

While the weather over the middle part of the country is a big question mark this morning, the New York area will bask in near record high temperatures this afternoon. Meteorologically, there's not much to this story. High pressure is sitting just off the coast and that is bringing us a warm, southerly breeze today. Central Park's record high for this date is 71 degrees set in 1890. We'll likely fall a couple degrees short of that mark, but other nearby locations, with much shorter climate records, will probably break their records today. more ›

Warm Weather Takes A Brief, Breezy, Break

Warm Weather Takes A Brief, Breezy, Break

Excuse us if we're still drunk from yesterday's excessively nice weather. Oh, who are we kidding, we're just drunk. Anyway, Thursday's high of 71 made it the warmest day of non-winter and the warmest in nearly five months. The last time the temperature was over 70 degrees was on October 11th. more ›

Where To Drink Outside Tonight (Or, Screw It, TODAY)

Where To Drink Outside Tonight (Or, Screw It, TODAY)

It was ridiculously nice out yesterday, and today has been even sweeter thus far, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s. We've already begged to have class blog outdoors—but alas, we'll just have to wait till the end of the day to take advantage of this spring surprise. Thankfully, there are plenty of bars that will be serving drinks outdoors this evening—and below, we've compiled a list of some we especially like. more ›

Insanely Great March Weather Today

Insanely Great March Weather Today

Did everyone make it through what passes for a major cold spell this winter? We had to put on a sweater yesterday! That's not the case today as high pressure has moved offshore and will treat us with a warm southwesterly breeze. Look for a high in the upper 50s—possibly 60—for the city and lower 50s along the coast and for much of Long Island. West of the city, the bone dry air of the past few days will combine with 10-15 mph winds to produce conditions favorable for the spread of brush fires. Red flag warnings have been posted for much of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. more ›

Week Off To A Sunny, Cool, Start

Week Off To A Sunny, Cool, Start

Lots of sunshine and blue skies today and tomorrow. High pressure north of the Great Lakes is finally pushing the cruddy clouds out to sea. Along with the sun comes some cooler air. Although it is hard to believe, today (probably) and tomorrow (almost certainly) will be cooler than normal. Huh? That hasn't happened since February 12th, and we haven't seen two straight cool days since January 21-22. Highs today and tomorrow will be in the 42-44 degree range. With the air being extremely dry, tomorrow's low will drop to the mid 20s. more ›

Warmest February, Second Warmest Winter, Ever Recorded In Central Park!

Warmest February, Second Warmest Winter, Ever Recorded In Central Park!

Break out the party hats and noisemakers!  With an average of 40.9 degrees last month was the warmest February in Central Park since records began in 1870.  The coldest February, which coincidentally was the last time a coldest month was set, happened in 1934 during Franklin Roosevelt's first term as president.  February 1934 averaged 21 degrees colder than last month, which kind of boggles our little mind.  The past three months were also the second warmest climatological winter on record, trailing only 2001-02.  more ›

A Wet End To A Warm February

A Wet End To A Warm February

Trivia question: What do 1984, 1998 and 2002 have in common? Unless a so-far-undetected pool of extremely cold air arrives by midnight they will be knocked down to a three-way tie for second warmest February ever recorded in the city. The most recent record warm month was April 2010. Care to guess when Central Park last saw a record cold month? Hint: A New Yorker was president. more ›

"Wintry Mix" Of Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain Expected Tomorrow Morning

"Wintry Mix" Of Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain Expected Tomorrow Morning

Some more seasonal weather is coming our way—or at least near our way. A "wintry mix" of snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected in the tri-state area. According to NBC New York, "In the city, the wintry mix is expected to change over to rain sometime before 4 p.m., though meteorologists say the rain/snow line continues to shift on computer models so the forecast is subject to change." more ›
